A domain or domain name is the location of a website when referring to an Internet address. The domain name "Hypernews.in" for example, resolves to the IP address "95.111.234.28." A name is generally simpler to recall than a big string of digits. A domain name can be up to 63 characters long, with a one-character minimum, and is inserted after the protocol in the URL, as seen in the example below, is called Domain Name.

Type of Domain

There are two components to the domain name "Hypernews.in." The first two are "Hypernews," which is a second-level domain, and ".com," which is a top-level domain (top-level domain). For further details on top level domains, see our top-level domain definition.

Top-level domain.

The last segment of a domain name – the part that comes after the final dot. The most common example is .com. Each TLD includes an independent registry controlled by a specific organization, which is managed under the guidance of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) These are the most popular types of TDLs (Top Level Domains name). Some examples include ".edu" for educational sites and ."com" for commercial sites. Country-Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLD)  Every ccTLD recognizes a specific country and is generally two letters long. For example, the ccTLD for India ".in".  ccTLDs are top-level domains that represent specific countries.
